Culinary expedition

An especially good way to enjoy Upper Lusatia‘s hospitality is by trying its local dishes with regional ingredients; the Upper Lusatian Gourmet Festival (Oberlausitzer Genussfestival) in the summer and the Lusatian Fish Weeks (Lausitzer Fischwochen) in the autumn provide a variety of opportunities for this.

In the Upper Lusatian heath and pond region, with Saxony‘s unique UNESCO biosphere reserve (UNESCO Biosphärenreservat Oberlausitzer Heideund Teichlandschaft), the old tradition of fish harvesting is accompanied by a varied programme of events. The rich dishes made of local fish such as carp, zander, catfish, pike and tench are a culinary delight. There is plenty to try, whether it is fish soup, special set fish meals or smoked fish.

Some other Upper Lusatian titbits which should not be missed are Kamenz sausages with Bautzen mustard, linseed oil with quark (curd cheese) and, at Christmas time, Pulsnitz gingerbread. The Upper Lusatian beers are as varied as the region itself. One of the best brandies also comes from here – from Wilthen, and anyone who is particularly thirsty after a discovery trip through Upper Lusatia and this border region will be revived by Oppach mineral water and Lusatian fruit juices.
