Upper Lusatia is a real cultural adventure thanks
to its wide variety of typical regional events, set
in the authentic backdrops of the historical cities
of Bautzen; Görlitz/Zgorzelec, a city of special
European significance; Kamenz, Löbau, Luban in
Poland, and Zittau. In the Middle Ages, these
formed the Upper Lusatian Six Town Alliance
(Oberlausitzer Sechsstädtebund). This alliance
offered safe passage to people travelling along
the “via regia“, which brought the cities prosperity
and power. Signs of this remain today in the well-fortified castles and the rich architecture
of the townhouses.
Another route – the “via sacra“ – winds its way through a millennium of culture and religious history in Upper Lusatia, Silesia and Bohemia. It connects some magnificently-furnished monasteries such as St. Marienstern Abbey, with religious treasures such as the “Zittau Lenten Cloth“. Frýdlant Castle, owned by Generalissimo Albrecht von Wallenstein, is just one of the important sites along the route where European history has been written.
Upper Lusatia‘s cultural legacy also includes romantic palaces, parks and gardens. Muskau Park, laid out in the English landscape garden tradition, has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2004. Rammenau, Saxony‘s most beautiful Baroque country park with its magnificent castle and lovely gardens, is well worth a visit at any time of year.
