Görlitz/Zgorzelec – An architectural work of art

Görlitz, the German-Polish Euro City on the Neisse River, is one of the most beautiful towns in Germany. As it was left unscathed by destructions during the Second World War, Görlitz still presents itself today as a fascinating picture book of 800 years of cultural history with a whole host of splendid buildings from the Gothic period up to Art Nouveau. In the last years, most of the nearly 4,000 cultural monuments of the town were redeveloped laboriously and with loving care. Thus, there are medieval towers, late Gothic arcades on the Lower Market square and magnificent Renaissance middle-class houses near the Neisse River as well as Baroque town residences on the Upper Market square or extensive Wilhelminian style quarters. A rich, attractive cultural scene causes throbbing life in these unique surroundings.

Görlitz/Zgorzelec – Under the sign of „Via Regia“

Since the Middle Ages, Görlitz has been a significant centre of trade and culture. It was here, that the mystic Jacob Böhme inspired progressive thinkers such as Goethe, Leibniz and Lessing with his thesophic ideas; and it was here, that influentual merchants created an architectural grandeur still visible today. In this respect, the town benefited especially from its position at the Via Regia. This former trade route is one of the oldest and most significant ones in Europe and led from Kiev up to Santiago de Compostela. Extraordinary museums and collections in Görlitz bear witness to the standing of the town and reveal that the people-uniting impact of this route continues to exist until today. In 2011, the 3rd Sächsische Landesausstellung (Saxon Regional Exhibition) in Görlitz will be dedicated to the topic »Via Regia«.
