Kamenz – The Lessing Town

The westernmost town of the Six Towns League is famous for ist greatest son: Gotthold Ephraim Lessing was born here in 1729. His ideals of enlightenment and tolerance are still today a universal guiding principle for human behaviour. »The Parable of the Three Rings« from Lessing’s most popular work «Nathan the Wise« belongs to the canon of humanistic education worldwide. In the Museum of the Lessing House built in 1931, the fascinating work and the person of the poet are revealed in a diverse way. Many angles of the town tell authentically about Lessing’s childhood which the son of a parson spent here.

Kamenz – Sacral and botanical treasures

Kamenz was first mentioned in records in 1225. In particular, several medieval sacral buildings, which even tower above the picturesque ensemble of mainly classicistic middle-class houses, bear witness to the significance of the town in the high period of the Six Towns League. Eight artistic, late Gothic carved altarpieces, which can be admired in three churches, are a special treasure. – On the verge of the town, the Kamenzer Hutberg with its spacious park invites to go for a stroll in nature. The area laid out in the nineteenth century by Wilhelm Weiße enchants with a rare variety of conifers as well as rhododendron and azalea types which turn the whole area into a sea of flowers every year in May.
