Löbau – Town at the foot of the mountain

The name of this little town already shows the impression Löbau gives visitors: The Slavic word »lubij« means »the lovely one«. ... In 1221, Löbau was mentioned for the first time by documentary evidence. Its historical town centre around the Altmarkt (Old Market) with its neat buildings and an imposing town hall testifies still today of a changeful past. Löbau was, above all, historically significant as a Convention place of the Upper Lusatian Six Towns League. In the Handwerker- und Sechsstädtebundmuseum (Craftsmen and Six Towns League Museum) of Löbau, the original cup of the league can be admired. Directly in front of the town, the Löbauer Berg ( Löbau Mountain) invites to relaxation in nature. On is peak, Löbau’s landmark, the »König-Friedrich-August-Turm« (»King-Friedrich-August-Tower«) is enthroned.

Löbau – Architectural valuables

Löbau has two worldwide unique architectonic particularities. The »König-Friedrich-August-Turm« (»King-Friedrich-August-Tower«) is the only cast-iron lookout tower constructed in plugging technology. It is not only evidence of perfected iron casting art in terms of craftsmanship, but also of the civic involvement of a Löbau master baker who realised the undertaking in 1854. It enables the visitors to have a beautiful panoramic sight of whole Upper Lusatia. – A jewel of the architectonic modern age is to be found at the Kirschallee (Cherry-Avenue). The Haus Schminke (Schminke House) was built according to a draft of the famous Build house Hans Scharoun in 1930–33. Shapes, materials and architectural idea are still inspiring architects up to the present time.
