Upper Lusatia.Cultural

The Sorbs, a Slavic people with their own language and many traditions, figure prominently on the calendar in the region bordered by Bautzen, Kamenz, Hoyerswerda and Schleife. The largest minority in Germany, the Sorbs were the first inhabitants of Lusatia, settling on both sides of the Spree in the early Middle Ages. Today, just as in the past, tourists and local people can see their customs close up. The colourful traditional costumes appear to their best advantage at the traditional dances. Easter is an annual highlight: visitors can follow the Easter Horsemen (Osterreiter), who herald Christ‘s resurrection, and watch the many Sorbs decorating Easter eggs.
