Germany’s largest commercially operated pond region is located in Upper Lusatia – the Upper Lusatian Land of Heaths and Ponds. About 1,000 ponds with a combined total surface area of approximately 5,200 hectares are cultivated here. Carp farming is a traditional line of business. Due to its significance for the German and European freshwater fishing industry, the Upper Lusatian Region of Carp Ponds is one of Germany’s industrial fishing zones which are subsidized through the European Fisheries Fund (EFF) until 2013. The focal points of the development program include a single corporate design, the farming and marketing of organically raised carp, the further processing of local fish as well as the integration of fish farming, special events in a natural setting, and tourism under one roof. The common denominator is the attempt to raise the identification level among the local population for the Upper Lusatian Region of Carp Ponds.
