Thanks to its geographical situation, the Upper Lusatia provides many opportunities for visiting the neighbouring countries of Poland and the Czech Republic so that you can get to know the customs of these new members of the European Union first-hand.
The German side of the border is also home to a Slavic ethnic group called the Sorbs. They not only add some colour to their home area in the northern part of the Upper Lusatia with the bilingual road signs, but also with their numerous traditions, including artistic decorations on Easter eggs, which local people and visitors can watch at close quarters.

Under this heading various projects and events not only enable you to view the art of pottery, carving and weaving etc, but also modern mining, metal processing and mechanical engineering companies.
As well as being in direct contact with skilled craftspeople, there is a great deal to discover about the history of the products and how the raw materials they use were created and are processed.

"Umgebindehäuser"…
…these special local timber-frame houses are a special kind of folk architecture and are only found in the Upper Lusatia region in Germany. A self-contained ground floor is surrounded by wooden pillars, which support the storey above it. These attractive Umgebindehäuser are the major features of many villages. Some of the buildings can be visited, allowing people to find out about the life-style of their residents, especially if the local history museum is housed in one of them.

Upper Lusatia Six Town League
This league created in the Middle Ages between the towns of Kamenz, Bautzen, Löbau, Zittau, Görlitz and Luban (Poland) provided merchants travelling along the old "via regia" trade route with protection against robbers - but only if they paid their fees. The towns, which grew rich through this source of income, constructed many magnificent buildings, which can still be admired today.
There are many exciting and funny tales to be heard of these early times and go on a trip back in time among the old ruins.
