Upper
Lusatia - a part of Saxony
Our region Upper Lusatia, situated in the eastern part
of Saxony, is an area full of diversities. wide, untouched
landscapes where heath and lakes meet with wonderful woodlands
and charming hills.
The towns are in good condition, with their treasures and
their precious architectural style, witness of a great past.
for hundred of years the region was a meeting point of significant
trade routes and is now becoming a bridge between Middle-
and Easteurope.
The Upper Lusatian towns have a rich history. In the year
1346 the six most important joined forces with each other
and founded the "Six Towns League". The league served
the defence against rapacious attacks of the feudal Aristocracy
as well as promotion of trade, handicraft and the protection
of peace.
In a few rural districts there are local signs written in
two languages, because the nation of Sorbs (also known as
Wends) have lived there for centuries. Language, culture,
tradition and customs have been kept and even today you can
experience Easterriding, Birdwedding and the painting of Easter
eggs with very old and typical ornaments.
Enjoy the national customes and get aquainted with the cooking
of the Sorbs!
Alive, attractive are the heath- and lakedistrict and the
interesting "Biosphärenreservat".
How about holidays in a hilly region?
The "Zittauer Gebirge" and the "Oberlausitzer
Bergland" in the south of Upper Lusatia have well-marked
walking-paths, wonderful views and resting places. For those
who like climbing: there are mountain tops with amusing names
such as "Satanshead" and "Flourbag".
More relaxing is a trip to the 100-years-old steaming railways.
Discover the hill "Oybin", better known as the "Pearl
of Upper Lusatia".
In Kleinwelka you are instantly standing in front of a 15
m tall Brachiosaurus. Her in the open air museum are many
copies constructed to the minutest detail of primitive animals
and protozoa.
Besides so many attractions in the summer, the Upper Lusatia
offers a number of winteractivities too, like skiing, cross-country
skiing, ice-skating and sledge rides.
The lakes, hills and medieval towns are only some of the reasons
to make holidays in Upper Lusatia. Believe, it is really hard
to count them. But you can find out, when you`ll stay here.
