The Upper Lusatia is a traditional energy supply region. While the Upper Lusatia used to rely on its "black gold", lignite, today, the appearance of the Upper Lausitz as an energy source is characterised by new energy sources, such as water, wind, biomass and sun. The Upper Lusatia is an example of the development of clean energy: At the Schwarze Pumpe site, the first pilot low-carbon emission lignite power plant is being built, and solar cells and thin-film photovoltaic modules are manufactured in Bischofswerda and Großröhrsdorf. However, Upper Lusatia companies lead the way in matters of energy storage, as shown by the development of lithium ion batteries by Li-Tec Battery GmbH & Co. KG in Kamenz.
