Mechanical engineering and metalworking are growth industries in the Upper Lusatia. Over 300 companies are active in the areas of specialised machine and tool construction, as well as fittings engineering, plant and metal construction. This is one third of all mechanical engineering and metalworking companies in Saxony. The companies hark back to the region’s industrial traditions – for example, paper cutting technology, oven construction, rail vehicle and agricultural machinery construction – and produce manufacturing and handling systems for the automotive industry, ventilation systems, waste sorting systems, robot systems, sheet panelling assemblies and tools using innovative processes such as laser or water cutting.
